On Thursday, April 8th 32 teams battled it out on Zoom spelling 35 words that stumped even the savviest spellers. As one of the oldest spelling bees in the nation, the First Literacy Corporate Spelling Bee brings together spellers from some of Boston’s top investment, legal, real estate, and software industries.
This year marked the 31st year of the Bee and the first-ever virtual Corporate Spelling Bee.
“In 2020 we were forced to cancel the Bee due to the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Terry Witherell, Executive Director at First Literacy. “This year we were determined to come up with a creative way to host our largest annual fundraising event. During these challenging times, our adult learners need support more than ever so cancelling the Bee again wasn’t an option.”
This year’s event was like no other, the virtual friendly competition raised over $217,500 to support adult literacy efforts throughout Massachusetts. A total of 69 spellers participated in the Bee and close to 100 people tuned in to watch the event and play along with the First Literacy Spelling Bee App. Words like zugenruhe, sastrugi, and guerdon challenged even the best spellers.
